The license activation key is tied to the ASA chassis serial number. Contact the Cisco Licensing Team in order to have your current license transferred to the replacement chassis serial number. The Cisco Licensing Team will ask for the Product Authorization Key reference number and current serial number. Additional information in regards to ASA licensing can be referenced in the Cisco ASA Series General Operations CLI Configuration Guide, 9.6.
Cisco Asa 5515-x Serial Number Lookup
Any appliances with a VID number equal to or earlier than the 'Possibly Affected VID' are possibly affected. Use the Cisco Serial Number Validation Tool in order to validate your ASA serial number(s).
The appliance VID and chassis serial number can be obtained from the CLI or through visual inspection of the security appliance. For units that have already failed due to this issue, a visual inspection of the security appliance or review of the Sales Order documentation is required.
For ASA5512-X, ASA5515-X, ASA5525-X, ASA5545-X, and ASA5555-X("ASA5500-X Series product" hereafter), a product is implemented using a separate enclosure (Chassis S/N)and an internal board (PCB S/N), each having a different serial number. This necessitates the use of a different serial number depending on the situation.
The serial number indicated on the seal attached on the packing box or the enclosure of the product represents the Chassis S/N of the enclosure. The Chassis S/N information is used for managing the contract information of Cisco products. You are expected to present the Chassis S/N in order to confirm the contract status when you need to open an SR.
For ASA Software 8.6(1), on the hand, which was initially installed on the ASA5500-X Series product, the serial numbers displayed in the output generated from the execution of the show version or the show inventory command represent the PCB S/N, which is the serial number for the internal board. This is intended to be used for issuing the Activation Key with the purpose of extending the functionality.
In Interim Release 8.6(1.2) or later of ASA Software, the serial number displayed by the show inventory command has been changed to refer to Chassis S/N.In order to confirm the serial number of the ASA5500-X Series product using the CLI,check the version of the software currently being used in the product.
A. This is normal. These parts expand to allow you to register your AnyConnect Plus or Apex license to all of your ASA serial numbers. This expansion SKU is not applicable to the newer banding-based Plus (L-AC-PLS-LIC=) or Apex (L-AC-APX-LIC=) SKUs or the VPN Only SKUs (L-AC-VPNO-xxxx=). See the AnyConnect Ordering Guide for details on license registration per SKU type.
A. The Product Activation Key (PAK) must be treated like cash. If you lose your product activation key before using it, the only other method we can use to locate it is with the Sales Order #. If you have previously used this PAK to register an ASA, the PAK can be located in the Cisco.com license portal for the user who performed the license registration. Cisco can look up this information based on a serial number used for a prior registration.
A. You most likely accidentally pasted in a trailing space after your serial number. Please remove any additional spaces after your serial number and resubmit your request. The other cause of this is that you clicked the Add Device button which is intended to add more than one Serial Number at initial registration, but you did not actually add any other Serial Numbers. For this situation, please click the Delete Device button and submit again without the blank space which is there to add an additional serial number.
A. When you purchase any term Plus or Apex license (or SWSS for Plus perpetual or VPN Only), a contract number will be generated for your purchase, this usually takes at least a few days from the time the license PAK is electronically delivered. Please speak with your reseller if you have not received this contract number from them. The contract number needs to be attached to your Cisco.com ID in order to enable SW Center access and the ability to open a TAC case. We recommend that you link your contract to their Cisco.com ID by mailing web-help-sr@cisco.com with the Contract # and their Cisco.com ID. It is very important that your customer profile address information matches the address information on the contract prior to attempting to link a contract or sending an email. The contract number is not the same as your Product Activation Key (PAK).
I have a Cisco ASA 5585 firewall. In Network Automation, on the device home page it showing a serial number that looks to be entirerly incorrect. I cannot determine where Network Automation is getting the invalid serial number. When I run the "Cisco PIX Check Version" diagnostic, it shows the output of:
When I go to the device Home Page, it shows a value of JMXxxxxxxxx. If I run "show tech-support" or any other command, I cannot find any serial numbers for either the cassis or any other component which begins with JMX. I cannot figure out where the serial number that begins with JMX is coming from.
It turns out when you run the "show version" or "show tech-support" commands, the serial number reported is the serial number for "module 0" which includes the processor. Oddly enough, when I executed "show tech-support", "show inventory" is not included n the diagnostic output.
An activation key is an encoded bit string that defines the list of features to enable, how long the key would stay valid upon activation, and the specific serial number of a Cisco ASA device. A series of five hexadecimal numbers, as shown at the top of the output in Example 3-1, typically represents that string. Each activation key is only valid for the particular hardware platform with the specific encoded serial number. The complete set of activation keys resides in a hidden partition of the built-in flash device of a Cisco ASA; other nonvolatile internal memory structures maintain a backup copy of that information. After Cisco generates a key for a given device, you cannot separate individual features from this licensed package. You can request and apply another key with a different set of features to the same Cisco ASA device at any future point in time. All features encoded in a particular key always have the same licensed duration, so activation keys can be classified as permanent or time-based.
Because activation keys tie to a particular device using the serial number, it is possible to attempt to activate a key from one Cisco ASA on another; the software automatically checks for such errors and rejects an incorrect key. Example 3-7 illustrates such an attempt.

It can sometimes be difficult to find the right part number, serial number and / or spare part number on IT hardware. Our technician Theo explains how to proceed.Finding the right number makes it easier for both you and us to understand which used IT hardware you want to sell, buy or want to find spare parts for.
Yes it is. A part number is a common number for all products of the same model. For example, two hard drives can have the same item number, whereas the serial number is a unique number for each product. Two hard drives can never have the same serial number.
